While interning at St. Jude last semester, I was able to assist with fundraising, event planning, and an event itself. November 23, 2013 was Walk Day all over America. The St. Jude Give Thanks Walk happens annually around Thanksgiving. I assisted with the Memphis walk, which took place in Collierville at the Carriage Crossing Mall. The weather wasn’t in our favor, but we still had a great turn out of participants and volunteers and raised over $256,000! The top Memphis participant raised over $12,000.
On Walk Day, my task consisted of getting hundreds of volunteers to their cheer stations. The walk was approximately three miles. About 20 cheer stations were set up along the route. Each cheer station consisted of volunteers from local organizations and Target employees. We supplied the volunteers with t-shirts, pom-poms, clappers, and other spirit memorabilia. The volunteers kept the participants on route and cheered them on to the finished line.
It was a great event and felt awesome to be around ALSAC workers, volunteers, participants, and even a few patients & patient families. Everyone shared a passion for St. Jude, fitness, and the holiday season.
Assisting with this event taught me organization and preparation for everything goes a long way. As well as it’s always important to make connections – especially with volunteers, supporters, and employees from other offices.
