Dr. Pitts pointed out something George W. Bush said, he said, “There should be limits to freedom.” And I asked myself, “Should there be limits to freedom, particularly speech?” One thing Dr. Pitts stated that was very true in my opinion is, “The First Amendment is the most dangerous words ever written.” This statement speaks volume because so many negative effects derive from hateful words, yet are protected under this Amendment. So, if there were limits to freedom of speech, what would those limits be and how would they be regulated?
I’m a Journalism major mainly because media interests me. I am so intrigued by how media influences everything in society, and has since it first came into existence. I like that everyone looks at TV and reads the newspaper for the answers to all of their questions, and I could possibly be that person giving those answers. I am journalism major because I have an opinion about everything and journalism and law were the only two outlets for me to be able to speak my mind, but I dread the thought of taking the bar and spending the rest of my life in law school.
This brings me to why freedom of speech is so important in communications. Freedom of speech is communications. It’s the premise of everything we stand for. Communications is news, but interpreted news passed on to the world through magazines, television, the internet, movies, etc. Without freedom of speech there would be NO COMMUNICATIONS. Everyone would think linear; the world would be boring; less chaotic, but boring. The First Amendment may be dangerous; however, if not for this law we wouldn’t have a job, (i.e. Journalism majors, professors, editors, news anchors, etc.)
I am inspired by what others have to say and what other people think. I love, yet hate that the media can influence one’s decision. I love that a publicist entire job is to teach their client how to lie to the public in order to be liked. Its mind blowing, yet it’s so fascinating.
