During my time as an intern at RSVP Magazine I had the good fortune to learn a great deal about the magazine industry while covering interesting and sometimes exciting events.
I was initially hired as an editorial intern, where I was tasked with event research, planning, copyediting, layout, design, and running the social media accounts. However, soon I was asked to cover events for the magazine as a freelancer on the weekends. Since RSVP only covers fundraisers, and based on percentage of income given to charity, Memphis is the second most generous city in the nation, I was pleasantly surprised to witness the philanthropic altruism of my hometown first hand.
However, most importantly, working for RSVP gave me the opportunity and the medium to develop my photography skills. The knowledge I learned in the classrooms at the U of M gave me a great foundation, but there is nothing like the hands on, trial-by-fire experience one receives while on assignment. When I first began, I only viewed photography as a tool to accentuate my writing, however I now see it as an equal, if not my preferred method of journalism.
Being able to rapidly switch my settings in a myriad of often poor and unique lighting situations, while interacting with large swaths of the public helped me gain confidence and adroitness behind the lens. Some of my favorite shoots to date include the Moon River Music Festival, Live at the Garden, Zoo Brew, Great Wine Performances, Art on Tap, and Sip Around the World just to name a few, because if there is one thing Memphis enjoys more than its philanthropy, its having a good time.
