This semester has been such a whirlwind trying to manage an internship, a job, school, and a social life, but it’s not an experience I would trade for anything. Before my internship with Substream Magazine, I wasn’t entirely sure what my niche was. Now, I know exactly what my ultimate goal is—to work for a major music publication such as Rolling Stone or Alternative Press.
More importantly, my internship has taught me the importance of beginning an assignment as soon as it is assigned. As a college student, procrastination becomes second nature. Although not encouraged by professors, most students habitually push things off until the last minute. At the beginning of my internship, I struggled with this habit. However, after one incident where I waited until after interviewing a band to listen to their album, I learned that it really is best to complete things as soon as possible, and not wait until deadlines are breathing down your neck to begin working on them.
My time with Substream Magazine has also helped me develop on a personal level. I’ve learned to keep an open mind to and share unbiased opinions about music genres that I used to hate. By learning to do these things with music, I have strengthened my ability to be unbiased and maintain open-mindedness with people. Growing up, most people are taught to not judge a book by its cover. I had to put this in practice with albums, and that has also reflected into my personal life.
Interning not only provides students with relevant, real world work experience, but it also helps them develop on a personal level. I’ve loved every second of this semester’s internship, and I can’t wait to see where I end up next.
