Hi, I’m Jessica Rainer, but everyone calls me Rainer because there are 1,999,878 Jessica’s. I’m interning at ALSAC St. Jude this semester. This is actually my second time interning with them. In January to May 2013 I interned with them and fell in love with the organization. After undergrad, I always knew I wanted to go back even if I didn’t work for them. I just couldn’t find the time in my busy schedule. The opportunity presented itself again and I am so excited because St. Jude is such a fun and encouraging place.
My responsibilities at ALSAC are basically assisting the event staff with prepping for events. From painting wine glasses for the Taste of Oxford, packaging goody bags for events, making marketing calls to donors, helping with radiothons, to gathering advertising and marketing materials for Dream Home. It’s pretty fun and laid back, which is why I love working there.
The learning objectives for the internship are to basically see what it’s like to be a field event coordinator for ALSAC. I sat in on a conference call for Dream Home with my supervisor last week, and I didn’t realize how much actually went into planning these events. There is basically one person working on everything, with maybe a manager overseeing them. From making sure the floor plans are together, to creating the PR and marketing materials, selling tickets to individuals and businesses, to working with the Channel 5, magazines, newspapers and other media to make sure the word gets out about the event. It’s a little overwhelming and I could only imagine how stressful it can be.
However, I want to learn everything they do, and how they manage such a busy lifestyle. I also want to learn more about how ALSAC’s events are so successful because they are raising millions for St. Jude every day from these events, and they are well known. Their relationship marketing is phenomenal and I want to learn everything about it because I essentially want to work in development for non-profits, and I can learn a lot from such a strong organization.
