My experience as a Level 1 intern at Obsidian Public Relations was a valuable one. I learned a lot of intangibles that I would have been unaware of, had I not been able to work alongside professionals in the field. I really learned how fast paced the field is by having hands-on experience rather than just reading about the profession in my textbooks.
The best thing about my internship was just being able to learn the nature and culture of public relations. I believe that if you aspire to be a part of something, rather it be an organization or a profession, that you should learn the culture.
It was very enlightening to see professionals work from morning to the end of the business day and see how they balanced multiple projects. Their efficiency and expertise rubbed off on me and I ultimately believe that their techniques that they passed down will help me better my skills. I learned how to conduct myself during team meetings and how to communicate and respond through e-mail in a professional manner. I discovered that the smallest details can make the biggest difference.
I thought that I would be intimidated at first because most of the people that I was working with had years of experience and I was just a beginner. They took me under their wing and made me feel comfortable working with them. They gave me responsibility and allowed me to find what worked for me in order for me to get my work done in a timely manner.
