One of the most exciting experiences during my summer internship at KAIT-8 in Jonesboro, AR, was when I received the opportunity to interact with the people in the city. I’m a Memphis resident, so I would drive an hour every three days to intern at the station. I was so dedicated to completing an internship in a smaller market that the drive did not affect me in a negative way. One Saturday afternoon, I shadowed a reporter on a story. The story was about a retired veteran who started an Air Gun club for the youth in the city of Jonesboro.
I received the opportunity to hold the guns and assist with the local competition. It was a fun experience for me, because it took me outside the newsroom. It gave me a different perspective of gathering news. I learned that you are not going to always sit in the newsroom and make phone calls trying to gather sources. Sometimes, you have to get out in the field, and get a real life perspective to supplement the story at hand.
