My name is Carly Cassady and I am a senior who was on the Memphis Women’s soccer team. I am majoring in Earth Sciences with concentration in Meteorology and minoring in Spanish and Broadcast News. I finished my Spanish minor during my sophomore year and will finish my Journalism Broadcast News minor this semester when I graduate in May.
Ever since I was about eight years old, I knew being a broadcast meteorologist was what I wanted to do. I am very interested and passionate about this career and am interning at Local Memphis ABC 24. I will be interning with the meteorologists as well as the reporters and other aspects.
I intern on Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday and there are four phases of this internship program. The phases include reporting, shooting and editing video, producing, and news production. I am also adding weather to my internship which is what my focus is on Wednesdays.
For reporting, we get to shadow reporters in the field to observe and learn how to craft a broadcast news story from beginning to final product. Shooting and editing will include training on how to shoot and edit with photographers and video editors. In the producing phase, I will learn the basic knowledge of producing by shadowing producers and putting into practice some basic tasks. I will also learn where the news content is gathered from, effective news copy and tease writing, story showcasing, and basic graphics. The news production aspect will include basic news production responsibilities and positions so I will have an understanding of what each news production members does before, during, and after each newscast. For my weather phase, I will shadow the meteorologists and receive training on forecasting, storm tracking, graphic building, and on camera performance. At the completion of my internship, I will make a final news package and weather forecast for my resume reel and have copy writing samples.
I have had previous internships at news stations in both Kansas City, KS and Washington, DC which I thoroughly enjoyed and learned a lot. I am very excited for my internship this semester as I feel it is more hands immersion and I can’t wait to see my progress from previous demo tapes to where I am now.
