My name is Cameron J. Symlar and I am currently a senior journalism student here at the University of Memphis. My focus is in news and I am hoping to one day become a sports broadcaster once I graduate in May 2015.
I was born and raised in Columbia, Tenn. and I have always had the dream of being on television. When I was younger, I was interested in weather, so I wanted to be a meteorologist. When I started becoming a big sports fan, I decided that I wanted to become a sports broadcaster. At first, I wanted to become a play-by-play announcer, so when a game would come on, I would practice broadcasting the game while watching it. During the summer of 2013, I had the opportunity to intern at News Channel 5 in Nashville, Tenn. I worked with their sports team and it really opened my eyes to what I wanted to do. After seeing what they do at a TV station, I changed my mind for the last time and decided to become a sports reporter/anchor. They have a better connection to the city they work in and it would be less traveling.
I wanted to intern again in television this semester, but I decided to gain more experience by interning at WUMR U92, which is the radio station right here at the University of Memphis. The job market in sports broadcasting is very competitive, so it’s always good to get experience with other things. I am one of the co-host of the Sports Desk, which is aired every morning from 8:35-9:00. I’ll be co-hosting with two others on Wednesday mornings. This is my first time being on the radio, so it will be interesting to see how much I improve over time.
