Unsurprisingly, holidays at a magazine have a special sort of chaos. No doubt, at the end of my internship next week, my head will keep spinning from the momentum for days to come.
Reflecting back, this position is nothing like I expected it to be. Where were the cranky editors, hastily shouting deadlines as they spilled their steaming black coffee? Where were the copy editors, peering at me smugly over their black-rimmed glasses, dangling that ugly red pen between their fingers? Where were the hundreds of phone calls, stilettos broken in frantic runs to late appointments, and the frazzled sense of self I just knew to expect?
In the four short months I interned with At Home Memphis & Midsouth, I learned just how enjoyable a position in this career could be. With time management, a somewhat developed writing skill, and an internet connection, you can work from just about anywhere. I’ve learned that if you want to be a writer, you have to be a little annoying to get what you want. You and your editor are the only ones who care about your deadline, so it’s up to you to be persistent enough to get the job done. However, I think that’s just a good life skill to have in general.
I’ve learned that the best route isn’t always the most difficult, and that communication with your superiors is crucial to a successful and enjoyable work life. I’ve learned that you have to be your own boss in order to get the most out of any position.
