The beginning of my internship at Sports 56 got off to a slow start. I did not start the job until late May, and I also had to balance my schedule as I was working another summer internship on campus in the Greek Affairs office. Having had a couple years of experience working in radio for WUMR on campus, the transition to being at a "big boy" station was not as difficult as I expected. The biggest things I had to learn at Sports 56 were learning the production board, how to program commercials and breaks into the computer system, and most importantly how to communicate effectively with the on-air talent without actually being able to speak with live on-air.
Another important thing that took me a while to learn is my place within the station. To be blunt I was an intern. What does that mean exactly? Well, it means that I was on the very end of the totem pole. At first I became too comfortable with most of the guys around the station, as if I had known them for years, but all it took was to say one thing to one of the guys and them not take it the way you expected them to. That experience made me realize that I was not one of the guys just yet, and that I had to earn my way in like everyone else. All in all, the beginning of my internship was and I had a lot to learn.
