My summer internship took place at KAIT-8 in Jonesboro, AR. My duties were to shadow reporters while they were out on stories, but I took the initiative to track down sources for possible soundbites. I took advantage of the opportunity to work alongside a professional. During my first month, I wrote teases for stories, anchor leads, web copy, shot video for reporter stories, and edited video for the 5:00/6:00 newscast. I personally chose to complete my final internship at KAIT-8 because I knew that I would gain so much more experience within a smaller market. The news director along with all of the reporters were so much help to me.
I received a great deal of feedback on my writing skills that I believe helped me improve in the long run. I learned the importance of meeting deadlines and working under pressure. I even had the opportunity to shoot some of my own video for my resume reel. The majority of the reporters came straight out of college, so it was easy for me to relate to them. The one thing that I greatly appreciate about my internship, was the ability to interview people for stories. The reporters allowed me to interview sources for their stories. They even asked for my advice on how to pitch a story. I felt so apart of the news team. My internship experience was well worth it, and I truly believe it has helped prepare me for Journalism in the real world.
