As soon as I walked up the narrow staircase to the loft of the Cotton Museum, something caught my attention. Walking on all fours was the most adorable mutt I’d ever seen. Miles the cotton dog walked right up to me and wagged his tail as if to say, “Welcome to your first day of loving me and your internship.” I knew just by meeting Miles that I was going to be very comfortable at the Cotton Museum.
My first task at the Museum was to go on a tour of the Museum itself and see what the building and history was all about. It was very fascinating right off the bat. There was so much I didn’t know about the cotton industry’s rich cultural history and the products it forms. For instance did you know that some make-up such as eye shadow is made from cotton?
The second day of my internship I was put to work, press releases, emails, phone calls, you name it. I was thrilled that they gave me Public Relations work to do on my second day. I can already see the benefits and rewards of this internship. I am glad they are allowing me to utilize my knowledge and polish my PR skills. Another great aspect of working at the Cotton Museum is the constructive criticism I receive for my work. It is very beneficial as an intern to receive criticism for your work, that way you are able to learn from your mistakes and become a better writer.
