Recently, I was let go of my internship/job. They laid me off and their reason for doing so was because sales were low and they had to let some people go. Seeing as this is our last blog post and I no longer am at my internship I can look back and reflect on my time at Fred’s inc.
I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to intern/work at Fred’s inc. I learned a lot from my experience there and from some of the people I worked closely with. The advertising/marketing department is a fast paced working environment. Everything you were told in school is true.
I also learned that anyone can be a leader, anyone can stand out. You have to be careful with what you say and how you say it, but if your ideas are fresh and likeable you will be respected. I feel like I was comfortable enough to share my opinions on some matters. The VP of advertising encouraged me to speak my mind and share my opinions with him. He and I got along well, which helped build my confidence whenever I spoke or had any ideas.
I realized that you have to have thick skin while working in advertising. Your ideas and creativity might get rejected. You may have to cooperate and compromise with things you don’t want to. People may say things to you that you may not agree with. Heck, people may just not like you as a person but you do have to come together and work towards a common goal.
Again, I had to go through some ups and downs which I believe every intern or entry level person has to go through. I learned a lot from it and enjoyed my time there. I’m happy I was an intern and believe it will help me later in the future as I look for a full-time position.
