My name is Sitoria Townsend, senior, communications major with a minor in journalism. I am currently interning at The New Tri-State Defender in the heart of downtown Memphis. I currently work at WHBQ FOX13 and Bernal Smith, the president of the Tri-State, comes into our studio very often, so I took it upon myself to stop him one day and talk about opportunities to intern and the rest was magic! During my first week I did a lot of observing of the office to get a better feel of how it runs on a day-to-day basis and have been in a lot of talk of what my interests are and what I would like to do. I also have been doing some programming with their mobile app and doing updates to it on a daily basis, such as push notifications, etc. Also, they recently have started a new TV webcast called TSD Television and very soon they would like me to get experience in producing some of the shows. Also, I will be closely working with one of the editor’s/writers to work on my craft of reporting and get some of my work officially published in the Tri-State. I am learning a lot as to how a newspaper actually runs behind the scenes, which will be a little different for me coming from production, but I am excited because I am looking to really get my feet wet and make myself as versatile as possible in this industry. Having the chance to work for a newspaper with such an enriching history is exciting and an opportunity of a lifetime. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for me in the remaining days of interning with the Tri-State!
