In the United States alone, there is said to be around 1.5 million non-profit organizations. If this is true, that means that there are a plethora of people who either work for one of these organizations or donate their time by serving. This number really motivates me to serve in Memphis and tells me that there are many people in this nation who care about giving back to their community.
Make-A-Wish is an international non-profit organization that grants wishes to children from ages 2 ½ to 18 with life-threatening diseases. It has been around for over 30 years and has already granted over 310,000 wishes since then. Not only does this institution change children’s lives by giving them hope, but it also changes their families, their friends, and the community they are a part of. Since starting my internship there about three weeks ago, it has also already made a huge impact on mine.
This spring I am getting the privilege to work at Make-A-Wish as a Volunteer/Program Services intern. This specific internship has been really interesting so far because I get to see two different sides of the process that goes into granting each individual wish. The volunteer side of my internship involves me calling volunteers, sending emails to people who want to serve, and updating the database system. Volunteers at Make-A-Wish are the foundation of the organization in my opinion. They give so much of their time to help the cause and even get to interact with the wish kids and their families. 9 times out of 10, they are also the first face the child and family see that is associated with Make-A-Wish. The program services part of my internship entails many tasks that are directly associated in carrying out the child’s wish. Some of the things I get to help with are booking flights, making itineraries, communicating with Make-A-Wish families, and doing inventory for the donations that we have received. There is so much to be done by not so many people, so the more I learn how to do, the more I can help the process flow much easier.
After only I short time so far with Make-A-Wish, I am really starting to understand how essential internships are in our society today to get a job after graduating from college. Experience is everything. I am improving how to multi-task, communicate more efficiently, research, plan, and be more responsible.
The staff that works at Make-A-Wish is incredible. They are helpful, always there to answer questions, and give great advice about how to improve. I think the reason that the reason why this specific organization is so successful is because they have an ultimate goal that they’re always striving towards and take every relationship they build through Make-A-Wish as an opportunity to promote their purpose.
