It’s December 1, 2014 and the University of Memphis football team is conference champions for the first time since 1971. What’s even better about that little fact is that I was able to be the play-by-play man for the game that solidified us as American Athletic Conference champs. Along with my sports desk colleagues and friends, J.T. Mullen and Matt Thomas, my team and I were able to broadcast what would end up being a romping by the U of M as the tigers beat the UConn Huskies 41-10. Blue and white confetti drenched the stadium as the team gathered at midfield for the trophy presentation after the final whistle. As I looked down at the crowd it seemed that not a single tiger fan had left early. Thousands stood and cheered as Head Coach Justin Fuente gave a postgame speech and raised the conference championship trophy high. I felt truly lucky as an aspiring sportscaster and mainly as a true blue tiger fan to have been able to have broadcast such a momentous occasion in the history of Memphis sports.
Now that the regular season has ended, the sports desk will be in full swing for basketball season. As the basketball seasons continue for both men’s and women’s teams, we will continue producing and broadcasting all the games we possibly can. WUMR, my current place of internship, will broadcast all women’s games that my team and I are responsible for producing. We will only broadcast the men’s home games at the FedEx Forum. And speaking of which, tomorrow is a big day for a few desk members. Drew Barrett will be getting his first play-by-play and newcomer Ryan Glover will also get his first airtime as a color commentator. I’m very excited to produce for them and see how far they’ve come since first joining Sports Desk.
