Dreams of skyscrapers, yellow taxi cabs, and Manolo Blahnik heels have danced in my head since I was a preteen. I blame the [way too] many “Sex and the City” episodes I binge watched at a young age.
Growing up in rural farm town, this dream seemed far out of my reach. I was constantly told that girls like me could not make it in the Big Apple. Being the ambitious, stubborn woman I am, I always kept this “unattainable” goal in the back of my mind.
Finally escaping the place I had been born and raised, I enrolled in The University of Memphis. It was the university and the city of Memphis itself that truly made me who I am today. Through my scholarship program, Emerging Leaders, and the journalism curriculum I was able to develop my leadership skills and learn to be competitive in the urban career field.
Last year, I took a leap of faith and applied for the National Student Exchange program. I chose to attend New Jersey City University. After learning my university placement, I began applying for internships in New York City. I applied for almost 20 before I found the best fit for me, Ink & Roses Public Relations.
I have now been living in the New Jersey City and commuting to New York City for three weeks. This experience is everything I have dreamed of and more. Simply walking through the streets of Manhattan is magical.
In my role at Ink & Roses, I do many practical tasks, research ways to promote our clients, and offer my personal ideas on documents prepared in our office. I am learning to think more creatively and to relate the products our clients produce to everyday life.
Although the weather is a bit chilly, I am thoroughly enjoying both New York City and Ink & Roses.
