I’ve always enjoyed the idea of doing public relations for a non-profit organization, and last semester I gained great experience as the communications intern for the Mid-South chapter of Make-A-Wish. During my time there, I learned many different skills and saw various sides of a non-profit that I didn’t even think about to begin with.
However, over Christmas break, I started thinking about other areas where I could apply my skills, other than just the non-profit field. Whether it was for an agency, the healthcare field, or a corporation, I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and get experience elsewhere.
Fast forward to today, I am the new public relations intern at Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation. This is a completely new environment that I’m not used to, but I’m enjoying the challenge so far. Some of the responsibilities and tasks that I have been working on since my start in January include writing articles for the Baptist Leader, coordinating and attending media calls, and conducting product research.
Even though I have only been working here for a few short weeks, I feel like I have already soaked up so much information and expanded my experience belt. Just two weeks ago, I was able to interview the CEO of Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women, Anita Vaughn, on the grand opening of the new Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children’s Hospital. She even gave me a sneak preview of the facility before the ceremony J
I’m excited to see how this semester goes, and I’m hoping that these next few months will give me clarity on what exactly I want to do and where I want to be after graduation in May. Thanks for reading!
