Excited is not the appropriate word for the arrival of Leonard Pitts, columnist for the Miami Herald. It was an honor to be in his presence along with the Mayor of Memphis, A.C. Wharton. Omer Yusuf, representative of the National Association of Black Journalists, warmly welcomed Mr. Pitts. As Mr. Pitts takes his stance at the podium he titles his lecture as, “Calling Me Out My Name.” Pitts throws several statistics at the audience within a matter of seconds. He also mentions the fact of how many people lack the knowledge of civics. Mr. Pitts was asked why he speaks on First Amendment rights and his answer was that “it gives a voice to people who have no voice.” I would have to say that Mr. Pitts is a very special man who still has a strong and promising future ahead. Overall, I really enjoyed the First Amendment Lecture because it helped me understand that I should be more knowledgeable about our First Amendment Rights as a citizen of the United States.
