The first day at any internship can always be a little hectic. You’re getting used to a work environment that unique in its own ways and different from previous jobs. Luckily, ALSAC (and more specifically the National Direct Marketing department) made my transition as seamless possible. Upon arriving at my cubicle I received gifts (a St. Jude bag, lapel pin, water bottle, and binder) which are pictured here. Everyone was incredibly friendly as my boss took me around our floor and introduced me to my new co-workers.
Next on the list was my boss showing me around the ALSAC building and some of the St. Jude campus grounds. I have to admit I probably got lost more than once even after the tour. The cafeteria had to be one of the best parts that he showed me and not just because the food. I learned that they served high quality foods for low prices to those who worked there and of course the food was free to families that were staying for a loved one’s treatment. They even had a string quartet playing for the kids which was one of the fun things they did from time to time during lunch hours.
Next I went on my official tour of St. Jude where I saw countless places within the hospital itself. It was really amazing to me to see on the very first day exactly why I was there: to help raise money for the kids. Finally, my day ended with receiving my first assignments and a meeting with a portion of the NDM team.
